Does anyone have any ideas (esp. cheap hi-tech) for eavesdropping on my reading groups? I would like to make it as unobtrusive as possible, although 4th graders can figure anything out. An old-fashioned tape player seems bulky and unreliable. I have my own iBook, so maybe someone has ideas for using it to record/video the kids?

Hi Terry-
Have you thought of using an IPOD or MP3 player with a voice recorder? I kind of have the same issue and don't quite know what to do! Talk to you soon!

Those would work very well. I had a friend tell me about cutting the back out of an animal and placing a zipper on it to put a recorder in it so that the kids wouldn't see it. It seems to work. THe kids have no clue and just go on with their business:)
Hi Terry-
They make MP3 voice recorders that are very small and cheap- radio shack sells them. I think if your kids got used to always having it around when they're meeting, they would get past their cognizance of it quickly and get back into their normal discussion mode.
Good luck!

Hi Terry,
These are great suggestions. I find kids get used to small tape recorder/mp3 very quickly. And, I don't think its a negative thing for them to know you're interested and that listening in is part of your way of learning. You can make it clear that you're not evaluating them, but just interested in the conversation. I'll look forward to hearing about how it's going!

I found a small tape recorder - I put it in the center of the round table before they start. Surprisingly, they don't mess with it or play with it at all!
