Hello all,
It has been quite interesting to read the proposals and associated questions. I am impressed be the depth and variety of subjects.
My proposal is based on my desire to determine if increased praise will inspire and ultimately help improve my students' writing. Rather than looking at their writing with an eye for errors, I will instead focus on the skills that are well done and keep my suggestions for change to the minimum. Is there anyone that is already approaching writing in this manner?
I have found the best motivator for my class is positive praise, so I am hoping that I will see a notable increase in their writing skills over the next few months.
I look forward to reading about other teachers' progress as our research progresses.
Good luck!
Janice

I'm glad the blogging process worked! Great to see your post. I'm excited about your project. It will be so interesting to see how the kids respond to increased praise for their writing. I'm especially anxious to see if a some of your more reluctant writers are more willing to take chances and to see value in their ideas when they begin to receive consistent, positive reinforcement related to their writing. Let us know how things develop!
Janice-
I saw someone speak last year that talked about something like this. Part of what they talked about was that it is important to look at how kids write and why and not what they write (his example was boys and violence). I know that isn't exactly what you were talking about but I think it still is interesting to think about. It helped me look at the mechanics of the writing (which is easier to correct than content) and not worry about the ideas AS MUCH. My focus in Writers Workshop is to just get them to write and build their confidence as writers by focusing on the positive. Now I am starting to focus on teaching specific aspects to strengthen their writing through individual conferences. The majority of my kids write now and I have a lot more to work with and I know exactly what certain kids need. I hope this is what you were looking for.
THis is our test comment! Hi everyone.
